Lizzies Mince/Cottage Pie


Serves 4




1 Onion, peeled and chopped

2 tbls Olive Oil

2 cloves of garlic, peeled and minced

500g Lean Minced Beef

1 packet of peeled, chopped butternut – steam for 4 mins in microwave and chop up small when cooked or use a potato masher to mash

1 stock cube

1 small can of tomato paste

1 x 400g whole tomatoes

400g chopped mushrooms

a good sprinkle of mixed herbs or chopped fresh herbs

250ml water

(6 medium potatoes)





  1. Heat the oil in a heavy based pot.

  2. Brown the onion and garlic and add the mince.

  3. Add the remaining ingredients, cover and reduce the heat to a slow simmer. 

  4. Allow to cook slowly for at least 30-45mins to ensure that the butternut completely mixes into the bolognaise.

  5. If you are making Cottage Pies – place the mice into little ramikins – peel the potatoes and boil in water until soft.

  6. Mash with milk and a small amount of butter. Season with a pinch of salt.

  7. Top the mince with the mash. Cover each pot with cling film and freeze.
